Check this out...
Forgive me [insert name here] for I have not posted in eons. Ok check this site out, I like the spirit in which it is written. It's a misspelling of Jerry Falwell's church site. It does a great job refuting some of the anti-gay interpretations of the bible. http://www.fallwell.com |

Sheep shearing for newbies...
Some suggestions: 1. Variable speed clippers are wonderful - slow it down for a while until you get the hang of it then you can speed it up without freaking out. 2. Don't start with a lamb "because they are smaller" - start with an adult - the fleece is much longer and much easier to shear - cuts like butter. Also they are less likely to jump around and more likely to stand for you. 3. Get the little booklet from Oster showing how to sit a sheep on it's butt and shear it like a real professional. Then shear it standing up gripping its neck between your thighs while you face backward. After you get a feel for simple shearing you will be able to think about doing it butt-style. 4. Be really really careful about flaps of skin like the front of the back leg where it joins the body - very very easy to cut them there, and under the neck, if you aren't extremely careful. 5. A 20 point goat comb works just fine to start out - the narrower gaps between the tines might slow you down a little but it makes cutting flaps of skin less likely. Stay away from the more aggressive "Arizona comb" with the flared tines... You can always switch later on... |

Real Men
Here's something I wrote last night. I was motivated by some discussions on a (gay male) mailing list about "Fag Pride parades" making us look bad... ---------------------------------- Do real men eat quiche? A real man eats whatever the hell he wants. And a real man wears whatever the hell he wants, whether it be jeans and workboots or a dress and pumps. We owe a large debt to the drag queens who in the Summer of 1969 fought back for 3 days against the corrupt police and city officials of New York City at the Stonewall Bar. They had the balls to take a stand for what was right. Those drag queens would faint dead away to see how free we are now to have gay pride parades. Nobody is forced to go watch the spectacle. So what if the news stations show the most outrageous 5 second clip from the parade? That's not half the bad public relations of a "rest area fag" trying to play footsie under the stall door with a straight man, or drilling holes in the partitions to get a peek. I've encountered that myself, talk about a vulnerable time to have your privacy invaded! Or what about the guys who feel forced into marriage to a woman but nature drives them to lead double lives until it all comes crashing down? How's that for great PR? A question for the "regular" gay men out there, the ones who can "pass" for "straight". What are you doing to be a positive role model? Are you able to be out to your friends? Family? People around you? What's wrong with people watching Queer Eye and seeing straight guys hanging out with gay guys without being freaked out thinking "what would my friends say?!?!?" If you can't be out yet, can you at least put a stop to anti-gay talk by saying "I know some gay guys and they are ok"? Today we face a political situation. On one hand, it's great that we've taken enough power for ourselves that we have become a serious target. On the other hand, we're being used as a distraction for even more serious issues facing this country. Like the monks that find babies floating down the river, we have to both pull them out and deal with why they are there in the first place - facing the threats directly, but not losing track of what is happening behind the scenes. Our focus is being drawn to the anti-gay marriage amendment and the presidential race, while just as seriously we're not paying attention to the congressmen and senators that are going to be running this country and confirming our judges for many years to come. And it's not about "gay rights" - it's about _American_ rights - injustice ultimately hurts us all. It's time for us to pull together. To borrow from the civil rights movement of the 60s, it is time to keep our "eyes on the prize" and fight for progress, not allowing ourselves to be divided. Next time you see a drag queen, blow her a kiss and tell her she looks FAAAAABULOUS. It's ok, you won't have to go home with her! |

New life
Finally, a new lamb... The first lambs of the season started appearing at the end of December. I have 3 ewes that have been waiting forever, it seems, and finally one had her lamb today. A healthy good-sized female. Very cute. She was in with the other sheep and doing well, then I fed them some hay, and when I looked around, she was laying on her side with her head downhill on a little sloping area... I picked her up and she was still alive, probably just got knocked over. I walked backward with her to lead her mom into the corner pen where I keep the new babies apart from the herd. She perked right up. This makes up for the old ewe I had to put down a couple of weeks ago. |

Don't even think about it, Ralph.
Dear Ralph Nader, I voted for you in 2000, in Wyoming, a heavily Republican state, because at the time I thought it wouldn't hurt anything, and would help you qualify for campaign funding next time around. You could have focused on non-swing states and gotten your message out without damaging the country. Yet you focused on swing states and contributed to Bush taking power. You are absolutely wrong when you insist that the two dominant political parties are the same. They both have major flaws, and strengths, but they are clearly NOT the same. You need to get over your "angry old man" bit and look at what you can do to be a _positive_ force in this country. Here's a link you should look at: http://www.repentantnadervoter.comVery seriously, Mike P.S. Yes I know you weren't 100% responsible for the Bush appointment, considering THIS: http://www.logcabinwa.com/archive/200011271807.shtml |

What she said...
I liked this short article about "gay marriage". http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4270436/I would have shown it to my dad who is in general agreement with everything except for her line about Bush's military record, that would blow her out of the water. Unfortunate mixing of agendas... I'm glad to see HRC is using the phrase "Marriage Equality" instead of the "sexualized" "gay marriage" or "same-sex marriage" - I have been arguing that the discussion should be about "Marriage reform" or something neutral like that. It's not about the sex, it's about two people committing to taking care of each other, to the great benefit of society. |

First lamb of the season
Here's the first lamb of the winter - born the evening of December 30th 2003. In the first picture, mom hasn't quite finished cleaning him off, he's still a little wet and his wool kinda yellowish. I'm putting it behind this link in case anyone is super-squeamish about such things but I think it is quite mild compared to TV nature shows. ( Here he is... ) Here he is the next afternoon, a little over 12 hours later: |

Such a geek...
I'm totally fascinated by the systems-level issues around the power blackout. And the system wasn't particularly heavily loaded... We had a working generator trip offline here in my area of Illinois as a result, although it only took a few hours to get it back online. I should go see if the old sci.risks newsgroup is still around somewhere... Current Mood: intrigued |
